SSSSSSSST | Academie Galerie Utrecht 2023

SSSSSSSST is an exhibition that stimulates the ears. What can be heard when we ourselves are silent? What do we learn when we listen better to our surroundings?

In SSSSSSSST, Elise ’t Hart brings together work by herself and that of ten artists and composers who inspire her, including that of HKU alumni Mark IJzerman and Valentijn Janssen. The exhibition was created in collaboration with musician, composer and sound designer Nils Davidse, alumnus of HKU Utrechts Conservatorium.

EN ROUTE

This composition is an imaginary space filled with sounds that are created and composed as freely as a painter puts his brush against his canvas and slowly creates a new landscape just by using his imagination, and not being constrained by the natural order of reality. This piece is inspired by the way Piet Mondriaan very meticulously divides color and space in his abstract neoplastic paintings. En Route is created as a part of a masters research at the Institute of Sonology, exploring Mondriaan’s paintings and writings about neoplastic music as a reference to create new ways of ordering sounds in space. This piece was originally presented as a virtual reality installation, giving the listener the ability to interact with the composition by physically moving through space.
